German dative prepositions: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu
A handful of German prepositions always take the dative case, no matter what the verb does. Learn these seven and a large share of everyday sentences gets easier: where you come from, who you live with, how you travel, and since when.
The seven prepositions
aus (from, out of), bei (at, with, near), mit (with, by), nach (after, to), seit (since, for), von (from, of, by) and zu (to). Some learners add gegenüber (opposite), which is also always dative.
A common memory trick is to sing them to the tune of the Blue Danube waltz: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu.
What the dative does to the article
After these prepositions the article changes. Masculine and neuter become dem, feminine becomes der, and the plural becomes den, with an extra -n on the noun when it does not already end in -n or -s.
| masculine | feminine | neuter | plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| definite | dem Bus | der Stadt | dem Haus | den Freunden |
| indefinite | einem Bus | einer Stadt | einem Haus | – Freunden |
| possessive | meinem Bus | meiner Stadt | meinem Haus | meinen Freunden |
Contractions you will hear every day
zu + dem = zum, zu + der = zur, bei + dem = beim, von + dem = vom. In speech and in most writing the contracted form is the normal one.
- Ich gehe zum Arzt.I am going to the doctor.
- Wir treffen uns zur Mittagspause. We are meeting for the lunch break.
- Er ist gerade beim Bäcker. He is at the bakery right now.
Examples
- Ich komme aus der Türkei.I come from Turkey.
- Sie wohnt bei ihren Eltern. She lives with her parents.
- Wir fahren mit dem Bus zur Arbeit. We take the bus to work.
- Nach dem Essen gehen wir spazieren. After the meal we go for a walk.

Common mistakes
Wrong: Ich fahre mit den Bus.
Right: Ich fahre mit dem Bus.
der Bus is masculine, so the dative article is dem.
Wrong: Ich wohne seit ein Jahr hier.
Right: Ich wohne seit einem Jahr hier.
seit takes the dative: ein becomes einem. Note the present tense: German uses it for something still going on.
Wrong: Ich fahre nach die Schweiz.
Right: Ich fahre in die Schweiz.
nach is used for towns and countries without an article. Countries with an article (die Schweiz, die Türkei) take in + accusative.
