The German verb werden: become, future and passive
werden is one of the busiest verbs in German. On its own it means to become. With an infinitive it forms the future. With a past participle it forms the passive. Knowing which job it is doing makes long sentences much easier to read and to build.
Conjugation
werden is irregular in the du and er/sie/es forms.
| person | present | simple past |
|---|---|---|
| ich | werde | wurde |
| du | wirst | wurdest |
| er / sie / es | wird | wurde |
| wir | werden | wurden |
| ihr | werdet | wurdet |
| sie / Sie | werden | wurden |
1. werden = to become
The perfect tense is ist … geworden. What something becomes is in the nominative.
A useful pattern is aus + dative … werden: what something turns into. The starting point is dative (because of aus), the result is nominative.
- Mein Bruder wird Arzt.My brother is becoming a doctor.
- Es wird kalt.It is getting cold.
- Aus dem kleinen Dorf ist eine große Stadt geworden. The small village has become a big city.
- Aus einem Ort wird ein beliebtes Reiseziel.A place turns into a popular destination.
- Was ist aus ihm geworden? What became of him?
2. werden + infinitive = future
The infinitive goes to the end. In everyday German the present tense with a time word is often used instead, but werden makes a plan or prediction explicit.
- Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.I will call you tomorrow.
- Es wird bestimmt regnen. It is definitely going to rain.
3. werden + past participle = passive
The passive puts the action in focus instead of the person doing it. In the perfect tense the participle of werden becomes worden, not geworden.
- Das Haus wird renoviert. The house is being renovated.
- Das Haus wurde 1900 gebaut. The house was built in 1900.
- Das Haus ist 1900 gebaut worden. The house was built in 1900.
Common mistakes
Wrong: Du werdest müde.
Right: Du wirst müde.
The du form is irregular: wirst.
Wrong: Das Haus ist 1900 gebaut geworden.
Right: Das Haus ist 1900 gebaut worden.
In the passive perfect, werden becomes worden.
Wrong: Ich will dich morgen anrufen. (meant as future)
Right: Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.
wollen means to want. The future uses werden.
