German word order: verb second and verb at the end (weil, dass)

German word order has two big rules. In a main clause the conjugated verb is the second element. In a subordinate clause it moves to the very end. Most word order mistakes break one of these two.

Rule 1: the verb is in second position

In a statement the conjugated verb is always the second element. The first element can be the subject, but also a time, a place or an object. If it is not the subject, the subject comes straight after the verb.

  • Ich lerne heute Deutsch.I am learning German today.
  • Heute lerne ich Deutsch.Today I am learning German.
  • Am Wochenende besuche ich meine Eltern.At the weekend I visit my parents.

Two-part verbs: the second part goes to the end

With modal verbs, the perfect tense and separable verbs, the conjugated part stays in second position and the rest goes to the end of the clause.

  • Ich möchte heute Abend Deutsch lernen.I would like to learn German this evening.
  • Ich habe gestern einen Film gesehen.I watched a film yesterday.
  • Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.I get up at seven.

Rule 2: after weil, dass, ob, wenn the verb goes to the end

Subordinating conjunctions such as weil, dass, ob, wenn, als and obwohl send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause. A comma separates the clauses.

If the subordinate clause comes first, it counts as the first element, so the main clause starts with its verb.

denn also means because, but it does not change the word order: Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.

  • Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeite.I am learning German because I work in Germany.
  • Ich weiß, dass du müde bist.I know that you are tired.
  • Weil ich müde bin, gehe ich früh ins Bett.Because I am tired, I am going to bed early.
  • Ich weiß nicht, ob er morgen kommt.I do not know whether he is coming tomorrow.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Heute ich lerne Deutsch.

    Right: Heute lerne ich Deutsch.

    The verb must be second; heute already takes the first position.

  • Wrong: …, weil ich bin müde.

    Right: …, weil ich müde bin.

    weil sends the verb to the end.

  • Wrong: Weil ich müde bin, ich gehe ins Bett.

    Right: Weil ich müde bin, gehe ich ins Bett.

    The whole weil clause is the first element, so the verb comes next.
