German relative clauses: der, die, das, den, dem, denen
A relative clause adds information about a noun: the man who lives next door, the film that I saw. In German the relative pronoun takes its gender and number from the noun, but its case from its role inside the relative clause. That second part is where most mistakes happen.
The relative pronouns
They look almost like the definite article. The differences are in the dative plural (denen) and the genitive (dessen, deren).

Two steps to the right pronoun
Step 1: gender and number come from the noun. Der Film is masculine singular.
Step 2: the case comes from the relative clause. In "den ich gesehen habe", the pronoun is the object of sehen, so it is accusative: den.
The conjugated verb goes to the end of the relative clause, and the clause is set off with commas.
- Der Mann, der dort steht, ist mein Lehrer.The man who is standing there is my teacher.
- Der Film, den ich gestern gesehen habe, war toll.The film that I saw yesterday was great.
- Die Frau, der ich geholfen habe, ist meine Nachbarin.The woman I helped is my neighbour.
- Der Kollege, dessen Auto kaputt ist, kommt mit dem Bus.The colleague whose car is broken is coming by bus.
With a preposition
If the verb or phrase needs a preposition, it stands in front of the relative pronoun, and the preposition decides the case.
- Die Stadt, in der ich wohne, ist sehr schön.The city I live in is very beautiful.
- Die Freunde, mit denen ich reise, kommen aus Spanien.The friends I am travelling with come from Spain.
