German two-way prepositions: accusative or dative? (Wechselpräpositionen)

The nine prepositions

an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen.

The rule: Wohin? or Wo?

Ask Wohin? (where to?). If there is movement towards a destination, use the accusative.

Ask Wo? (where?). If you describe a location, use the dative.

Verb pairs that follow the rule

German has pairs of verbs where one describes putting something somewhere (accusative) and the other describes where it is (dative): legen / liegen, stellen / stehen, setzen / sitzen, hängen (to hang something up) / hängen (to be hanging).

• Ich stelle die Flasche in den Kühlschrank.I put the bottle in the fridge.
• Die Flasche steht im Kühlschrank.The bottle is in the fridge.
• Sie hängt das Bild an die Wand.She hangs the picture on the wall.
• Das Bild hängt an der Wand.The picture is hanging on the wall.
• Wir gehen in die Stadt.We are going into town.
• Wir sind in der Stadt.We are in town.

Contractions

in + dem = im, in + das = ins, an + dem = am, an + das = ans.

• Ich gehe ins Kino.I am going to the cinema.
• Ich bin im Kino.I am at the cinema.

Common mistakes

• ✗ Wrong: Ich stelle die Milch in dem Kühlschrank.

  ✓ Right: Ich stelle die Milch in den Kühlschrank.

  stellen is movement to a place (Wohin?), so accusative.

• ✗ Wrong: Das Auto steht vor das Haus.

  ✓ Right: Das Auto steht vor dem Haus.

  stehen describes a location (Wo?), so dative.

• ✗ Wrong: Ich lege mich auf dem Sofa.

  ✓ Right: Ich lege mich auf das Sofa. / Ich liege auf dem Sofa.

  sich legen is the movement (accusative); liegen is the result (dative).
